Q 2 Read the extract and complete the activities given below it.

The idea that coffee is bad for the heart pops up periodically. It was found that regularly drinking very strong coffee could sharply increase cholesterol levels. Researchers even isolated fatlike chemicals, cafestol and kahweol, responsible for the rise.

It turned out that the European brewing method—boiling water sits on the coffee grounds for several minutes before straining – produces high concentrations of cafestol and kahweol. By contrast, the filter and percolation methods remove all but a trace of these chemicals. Moreover, the studies involved large amounts of coffee—five to six cups a day. Moderate coffee drinkers down only two cups.

Research has also shown that regular, moderate coffee drinking does not dangerously raise blood pressure. And studies have failed to substantiate fears that coffee might trigger abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) in healthy people.

“For heart disease, I think the issue is closed,” says Meir Stampfer, an epidemiologist at Harvard who has studied many aspects of coffee and health. “Coffee drinking at reasonable levels is unrelated to heart risk.”Evidence suggests that coffee may help fend off Parkinson’s disease. A 30-year study of 8000 Japanese-American men found that avid coffee drinkers had one-fifth the risk of those who didn’t drink the brew.

Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, found indirect evidence that Caffeine- the habit-forming stimulant in coffee – may combat Parkinson’s disease. The caffeine seemed to protect mice brain cells from the depletion of the nerve chemical dopamine – the problem underlying Parkinson’s disease in humans. However, these are preliminary findings; human studies have- not consistently supported caffeine’s protective role.

The studies on coffee and cancer have focussed on three organs – and are reassuring. You may remember a brief coffee scare in the early 1980s when a single study linked coffee with pancreatic cancer. A false alarm: Many studies since then have shown that the association is either extremely weak or non-existent. If there’s a connection between coffee and bladder cancer, it possibly applies just to coffee junkies. A reanalysis of ten European studies found an increased risk only among people who drank ten or more cups a day. And studies show that coffee seems to have no adverse influence on the risk of colon cancer.

Caffeine is such a powerful stimulant that the International Olympic Committee and the National Collegiate Athletic Association set limits on how much can remain in the blood during competition. In addition to boosting physical endurance, caffeine increases alertness and improves mood. The buzz may come at a price, though. People who drink more than they’re used to may become restless and unable to sleep. Moreover, it’s possible to become physically dependent on caffeine for days.

The question now arises: how much to drink? Those with heartburn and anxiety may want to see if cutting back on coffee improves their condition. For most people, however, there’s virtually no risk in consuming up to three normal cups a day. Harvard’s Stampfer tries to keep his coffee drinking irregular enough to avoid habituation: “That way, I can get a buzz when I feel like it.”

When I had money, money, O!

I knew no joy till I went poor;

For many a false man as a friend

Came knocking all day at my door.

Then felt I like a child that holds

A trumpet that he must not blow

Because a man is dead; I dared

Not speak to let this false world know.

Much have I thought of life and seen

How poor men's hearts are ever light;

And how their wives do hum like bees

About their work from morn till night.

So, when I hear these poor ones laugh,

And see the rich ones coldly frown

Poor men think I, need not go up

So much as rich men should come down.

When I had money, money, O!

My many friends proved all untrue;

But now I have no money, O!

My friends are real, though very few.

My father travels on the late evening train

Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light

Suburbs slide past his unseeing eyes

His shirt and pants are soggy and his black raincoat

Stained with mud and his bag stuffed with books

Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age

fade homeward through the humid monsoon night.

Now I can see him getting off the train

Like a word dropped from a long sentence.

He hurries across the length of the grey platform,

Crosses the railway line, enters the lane,

His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward.

Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,

Eating a stale chapati, reading a book.

He goes into the toilet to contemplate

Man's estrangement from a man-made world.

Coming out he trembles at the sink,

The cold water running over his brown hands,

A few droplets cling to the greying hairs on his wrists.

His sullen children have often refused to share

Jokes and secrets with him. He will now go to sleep

Listening to the static on the radio, dreaming

Of his ancestors and grandchildren, thinking

Of nomads entering a subcontinent through a narrow pass.

                 Poetic Appreciation

Father Returning Home’ is the famous poem by Dilip Chitre, taken from "Traveling in the cage". He is known as a bilingual poet. He has translated ‘the popular Marathi Abhangas (Spiritual Poem) "Says Tuka" into English. He received the Prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his remarkable contribution to poetry as well as to Translation. The present is an autobiographical poem where the poet shows the complete solitude and lethargic life of an old man in modern society by depicting a picture of his father returning home from work. Thus the main theme of the poem is "Man's Isolation from a materialistic man-made World". The poet expressed his feelings for his working father. He realised that his father was neglected and uncared for despite being the lone bread-earner for the family.

Though the poem ‘Father Returning Home’ has autobiographical touch, it goes beyond its autobiographical significance. As is an account of every old man in a suburban area who does hard work for his family but leads a monotonous life where no one to converse with him, understand his feelings and look after him.
The poem consists of two stanzas the first stanza is 12 lines and the second stanza is 13 lines. It is a free verse where there is no rhyme and no rhythm. The poem is very symbolic the very structure of the poem is also symbolic as the lack of rhythm symbolises that the poet’s father was uncared for life. The language is easy and simple but full of imagery and symbolism. It is in first person narrative where the poet himself is the speaker who narrates the isolated life and monotonous routine of his father. The prominent figures of speech in the poem are Alliteration, Simile and Onomatopoeia. The poet expresses his feelings for his old father, but every old father has almost the same condition so we can take the moral from the poem that 'we must look after the elderly members in our family and society' I like the poem very much as it depicts the real picture of monotony and lethargic life of the elderly hard-working person in the modern society.

Honourable principal, respected teachers and my dear friend wish you a very happy republic day. We are very fortunate that we are citizens of India. India is one of the most important nations in the world. But unfortunately, we are considered a developing nation, I wanted to see India as a developed nation. I have an idea about how India will be as a developed nation. It will be a corruption-free India. Where work will be done without any bribe. It will be an independent nation where we don't have to import any product as our nation will be capable of the production of all our requirements. We must be vocal for locals. India will be independent in all fields where we don't have to rely on others. Looking at the present achievement of our nation while dealing with the pandemic, I am very sure that India will be the number one nation in the world as recently our honourable prime minister Mr Narendraji Modi got the recognition as the best prime minister in the. The day of half yearly report of the student council was meant to measure the work done by the teachers. The whole program was led by the students. The anchor of the event were the two students from Braithwaite's class Miss Joseph and Denham. Apart from being in charge of the event they both take care that all the representative must present their subject effectively and they help them in it, it reflects their leadership quality. They call all the girls as' Miss' and all the boys as 'Sir' which shows their way to respect others. 2. Answer in about 50 words the questions given below. (4)

1. Explain how the author has made use of International Date Lines and time zones in his novel.

Phileas Fogg, the protagonist was challenged to complete the journey around the world in Eighty days. He accepted the challenge and went through his journey to the countries like India, Hong Kong, America and Beck to England. By travelling eastwards he had gained time by journeying through all those time zones. In the end, it seemed that he had lost the challenge as he was unaware of the time he earned because of the international Dateline, but it was his friend who realise it and ultimately they won the challenge.

Thus the author has successfully used the international date line and time zone in his novel.

2. 'Money was never a concern for Mr Phileas Fogg; it was for the honour he accepted the wager.' Discuss

Phileas Fogg was a man of innovationWith the help of his calculation, he predicts that one can complete the journey around the world in eighty days. But his colleagues doubt his ability to do so and they made fun of his calculation and challenged him that if he complete the journey he will get 20 thousand pounds. Fogg has accepted the challenge, not for the sake of money but it was the question of his honour. He spent all his saving only for the sake of self-respect.

Thus money was never the concern for Phileas Fogg, it was an honour.
