About the Author 

The author J.G.Verne is a multidimensional personality as he used to write poems, dramas and novels. He is known for his popular series of adventures novels, the last one is "Around The World In Eighty Days" published in a year 1873 Verne is the second largest translated writer in the world only after Agatha Christ. Around 4751 books are translated into various languages across the word. Major Characters :- 

1) Phileas Fogg :-
The protagonist of the novel "Around The World In Eighty Day"s. He is the inventor, who loved to invent new things he was challenged by his fellow mate over his prediction that one can not complete the journey around the world in eighty days. He took the challenge and completed it courageously. 

2)Aouda:-
In the journey around the world he met her in India. She is Parsee Indian princess. She was rescued by Fogg and group. She had been one of the companions in the journey, later she became his life companion. 

3)Jean Passepartout:-
He is an employee of Fogg who has been honest and loyal to him through out his journey. He is a French man who accompanied him in the journey around the world in eighty days. He is known for his Loyalty, honestly and dedication towards his master. 

4)Detective Fix.:-
He is the detective who has been following Fogg and group through out the journey because he was wrongly anticipated that it's Fogg who has done robbery in the Bank of England that's why he has been waiting for the warrant to arrest Fogg.

1) Sir Francis Cromarty:-
He met Fogg and group in India. He is the Brigadier General. He has been with Fogg from Bombay to Calcutta.

2) Members of The Reform Club:-

At San Francisco Fogg, Fix and Aouda find themselves in Montgomery Street, which is crowded by the members of two opposing political parties. The opposing members become violent and Fogg’s group is caught in between. A huge fellow with a red goatee, a ruddy complexion and broad shoulders, raises his fist over Mr. Fogg. Fogg is very angry and later these two men even resort to duelling.

5) Elder William Hitch: 

A priest boards the train from San Francisco to New York at Elko Station. He is a Mormon missionary, who gives a lecture on Mormonism in Car no. 117 of the train.

6) Mudge: 

An American at Fort Kearney station, offers to transport Fogg and group on a sledge to Omaha station. This skipper of a land craft manages to transfer the group safely to Omaha station in a few hours.

               Themes of the novel

 'Around The World In Eighty Days'
The theme of the the novel "Around The World In Eighty Days" is full of adventures and excitement. The novel deals with the themes like Time, imperialism, love, morality, relationship, perseverance, problem solving etc.
            
    TIME

Time is the dominant theme of the novel. 
The title itself indicates the important of the time as it has limitations of completing the journey around the world in time bound that is in eighty days. During the adventure of the journey it's time which foil the plans of the Fogg and group. It has been proven time and again during the journey that "time is fickle and either it works for or against them. In many cases time foil their plans when the delays build up and the ships and trains leave without them. Through out the journey the time keep playing with them as they plans and it's foiled by the time. Even at the end of the novel it seems that they have lost the race but again it's time they get due to the international date line which worked in their favour and they win the race. It indicates that no one can control the time, time works the way it wants to work and we humans are at the mercy of the time. 

Imperialism

The novel is written in the 19th century. It was the time when the British colonisation was it's heights, this novel deals with themes of imperialism and Western influence on the world. Detective Fix was able to chase Fogg for so long precisely because so many of the territories he ventures into were British-owned. Places like India and Hong Kong hugely display the effects of colonization; mixed in with native cultures and customs are traces of English influence. Today, it's looks impossible that one country having this sort of control over the world. Thus due to the British imperialism it was possible for Fogg to travel smoothly through so many countries. 

 Love and relationship.

Before the journey around the world, Fogg lived the solitary life. He closed himself to others and least bother about what other people thinks about him. But the journey around the world has made him realise the value of relationship and love. The journey gave him the true love of Aouda and loyalty and friendship of Passepartout. Thus the novel deals with the theme of love and relationship.

 Perseverance

When Phileas Fogg undertake the mission to complete the journey around the world in eighty days. Despite of the innumerable obstacles he faced from the beginning of the journey till the end yet he stayed on his way firmly. He showed his coolness and calmness constantly and keep doing his work whatever he had set his mind for. But it's not only Fogg who showed perseverance but there are other characters too, like Passepertout and detective Fix who showed the perseverance through their efforts to arrest Fogg inspite of having many difficulties. Thus the both protagonist as well as antagonist showed their perseverance through the novel. 

Plot

The plot of the novel 'Around The World In Eighty Days' started at the Reform Club England where many people gathered like Phileas Fogg, Thomas Flanagan, Samuel Fallentin,
and John Sullivan. They have been discussing about the robbery in the Bank of London. The protagonist Fogg is of the opinion that one can travel around the world in eighty days. It brought the betting and all other bet with him that if he can travel around the world in eighty days they will give him twenty thousand pounds. This is the beginning of the entire plot then the readers witness the adventurous journey of Fogg along with his servant passepartout. There has been innumerable obstacles on the way but Fogg along with his companions overcome all the difficulties and at the end it seems that they have lost the bet as Fogg was arrested by Detective Fix but the time plays the twist and passepartout cames to know that they have gain the day because of the international date line. And they reached their destination before the schedule time. Thus the moral behavior of Fogg and the loyal support of his servant and love and affection of Aouda enable him to overcome the all obstacles. At the end Fogg only won the bet but also won the heart of the charming and beautiful Aouda.

                      Setting            


Setting is the time and place of the story. The story of the novel Around the world in Eighty days took place in around 1872. Fogg begins his journey around the world from his home that is London, England in October 1872. This is time when large number of areas/countries in the world were ruled by the Britishers which helped him to undertake the journey. It was the time of imperialism. Most of Fogg's stopping points are related in great detail, showing Verne's massive knowledge of foreign places, as well as ships and railways. He describes, mostly through Passepartout's eyes, places such as Paris¸ Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Singapore, Hong-Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, New York, Liverpool, and London. Whoa.The narrative takes place in 1872 during the months of September to December. It's definitely a novel of its time because of the extreme emphasis on new, industrialized modes of travel and Phileas Fogg and Passepartout's relationship as man and servant. The two spend lots of time on trains and ships, but also take on strange new means of travel such as riding an elephant and hopping in a vehicle called a sail-sled.

Setting of the extract is in London,  Liverpool where he was arrested by Detective Fix. And the final scene is at the "Reform Club".

Detective fix was always creating an obstacles in the way of Phileas Fogg. He tried to quit him by wrongly arresting him. Though he loses valuable time due to this arrest and imprisonment, he never lost the hope as a result he was able to reach his destination in time as they have earned full day due to international time line. When Fogg releases, he makes every effort to reach London on time. He arranges a special train from Liverpool. He does not quit when he feels that there is some faint chance of a win. This shows his fighting spirit, determination, and persistence.Finally, he comes out as a winner. He wins the bet as well as the love of a good woman. In fact, he proves that fortune favours the brave. So, it is rightly said, 'Quitters never win and Winners never quit.'

He had to travel around the world in 80 days, and he did it just in time. It's a really tense moment because they're racing against the clock to get back to London.
