Q.1 (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12) [16] After working for all these software companies for so many years, I wanted to return to my first love i.e. to read and write on various subjects concerning human life and existence. I therefore, I gave up two offers of around 3 crore rupees per annum to become a writer. This is how my second innings as a writer in Marathi began. After this, I have written about 34 books in Marathi. Most of them have become bestsellers with tens of thousands of copies sold for each. However, it is not the sales or the money that is important to me as much as the fact that these books have brought about very good changes in the lives of thousands of readers. After reading my autobiography Musafir and a book on Psychology Manat, hundreds have come out of depression and more than a dozen have given up thoughts of committing suicide and decided to start all afresh. There are hundreds who tell me that they understood the theory of relativity or Big Bang after reading my book on science 'Kimayagar. My book 'Boardroom' on Management has created at least 20 successful entrepreneurs. Then there are hundreds who tell me that they now can understand Economic Times or NDTV Profit after reading my book on economics Arthat. Many have turned to Mathematics after reading my book on Mathematics 'Ganiti.' The same is true about my books on Indian Music (Nadvedh), English Literature (Zapoorza), Painting (Canvas), Western Films (Limelight) and Western Music (Symphony) or books such as 'Genius' series, 'Rakta' or Vitamins or Anartha. It is these reactions of thousands of readers and the feeling that I am touching the hearts of thousands, if not lakhs, of my readers, that keeps me going. Why am I telling you my story? When I look back there are a number of lessons and values that I cherish an keep learning about even today. Some of these are: Thin for knowledge, Curiosity, Humility, Humanity, Rationality, Equality, Team work, Quest for excellence, Never say die, Thinking big... |

Q.2 (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12) [18] My inspiration comes from my childhood experiences and observations of nature in rural Kenya. As I was growing up, I witnessed forests being cleared and replaced by commercial plantations, which destroyed local bio-diversity and the capacity of the forests to conserve water. In 1977, when we started the Green Belt movement, I was partly responding to the needs identified by rural women, namely lack of firewood, clean drinking water, balanced diets, shelter and income. Throughout Africa, women are the primary caretakers, holding significant responsibility for tilling the land and feeding their families. As a result, they are often the first to become aware of environmental damage as resources become scarce and they are incapable of sustaining their families. The women we worked with recounted that, unlike in the past, they were unable to meet their basic needs. This was due to the degradation of their immediate environment as well as the introduction of commercial farming, which replaced the growing of household food crops. But international trade controlled the price of the exports from these small-scale farmers, and a reasonable and just income could not be guaranteed. I came to understand that when the environment is destroyed, plundered or mismanaged, we undermine the quality of our life and that of future generations. Tree planting became a natural choice to address some of the initial basic needs identified by women. Also, tree planting is simple, attainable and guarantees quick, successful results within a reasonable amount of time. This sustains interest and commitment. Together, we have planted over 30 million trees that provide fuel, food, shelter, and income to support our children's education and household needs. The activity also creates employment and improves soil and watersheds. Initially, the work was difficult because they were unaware that a degraded environment leads to a scramble for scarce resources and may culminate in poverty and even conflict. They were also unaware of the injustices of international economic arrangements. Later, they became aware of the widespread destruction of the ecosystems, especially through deforestation, climatic instability and contamination of the soil and waters all contributed to excruciating poverty and subsequent riots. |
Positive effects of tree plantation | 1) It provides fuel, food, and shelter. 2) It generate income to fulfill educational and house hold needs 3) It creates employment and improve the soil and watershed. 4) It prevent the deforestation and destruction of ecosystem. |
Summary Writing."Restoring Hope: Women's Role in Environmental Renewal" Commercial farming in rural Kenya led to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and water conservation issues. African women, responsible for family sustenance, noticed resource scarcity and unmet basic needs due to environmental degradation. The Green Belt Movement, started in 1977, addressed these issues through tree planting, providing fuel, food, shelter, and income, and improving soil and watersheds. Initially unaware of the link between environmental damage and resource scarcity, the women later understood the broader impacts. Over 30 million trees have been planted, supporting community well-being and mitigating environmental disruption. Planting for Change: How the Green Belt Movement Helps. Large-scale farms replaced crops grown for family meals, making it hard for African women, who take care of their families, to find what they needed. This environmental damage, caused by poor management, led to fewer resources, less money, and sometimes even violence. The Green Belt Movement addressed this by planting trees. These trees provided things to cook with, food to eat, and places to live, and gave women money to raise their children and care for their homes. Planting trees also improved the soil and created jobs. This helped women and stopped the environment from getting worse. |
