Section. II Poetry

 Q 1 Raed the following lines and complete the activities given below it.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Q 4 B Poetic Appreciation

Read the extract and write the appreciation of the poem.

They hear no sound, the swell is strong; Though the wind hath fallen they drift along, Till the vessel strikes with a shivering shock,- 'O Christ! it is the Inchcape Rock!'

Sir Ralph the Rover tore his hair; He curst himself in his despair; The waves rush in every side, The ship is sinking beneath the tide.

But even in his dying fear One dreadful sound could the Rover hear, A sound as if with the Inchcape Bell, The Devil below was ringing his knell.

Expected Answer:- Poetic Appreciation of "The Inchcape Rock"

Appreciation of the poem The Inchcape Rock" is penned by the renowned poet Robert Southee. This is a narrative ballad of four stanza each with a regular rhymes scheme abab.

The poem has poetic devices like Alliteration, personification, imagery.
The central idea of the poem is the consequences of one's actions. Sir Ralph's decision to cut down the bell on the Inchcape Rock leads to the destruction of his own ship and the loss of his life. The poem illustrates the importance of following rules and considering the impact of one's actions on others.

The moral of the poem is that wrongdoers will eventually face the consequences of their actions. Sir Ralph's greed and disregard for the safety of others lead to his downfall. The poem serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of selfishness and the importance of considering the well-being of others.

I like this poem as it gives us the lesson of life "As you sow, so shall you reap"
