Book Review of "Humans of COVID: TO Hell and Back."
The writer of the book Humans of COVID is the renowned television anchor Barkha Dutt. She has traveled across 14 States, and she goes beyond statistics and policies to humanize the tragedy that COVID-19 imposed on the people. The genre of the book is nonfiction.
The subject of Barkha Dutt’s book,  Humans of COVID: To Hell and Back, is about the people she met on the road over two years of covering the pandemic for her digital media platform, Mojo Story. It is a poignant narration of the struggles of COVID-19 victims and survivors, the challenges faced by first responders and bereaved families, and the unexpected gestures of goodwill that came from strangers. How Indians fought the scourge of coronavirus, personal grief, and financial hardship at a time when India failed to save the living and refused to count the dead, is overwhelming to read. The book was not a planned one but Barkha was quick to realize that the real story of COVID could neither be told sitting in the studio nor just depend on the government’s statistics, policies and announcements.
Being the media personality the language of the book of Barkha Dutta is refined but easy to understand. The presentation in the book is so realistic that every reader finds his/her own story in the book. Even the narration style makes this book a real experience.
The book Humans of Covid is an eye-opener as it gives a detailed account of human relationships, how many elderly people were thrown out of the house, and how the frontline workers were risking their lives to save people. This book has a message for the readers that it's not easy to be a journalist. The writer had lost her father due to covid. Hence the book is beneficial for the readers to understand the agony of the people of covid. The book Humans of Covid gives us the strong message that life is precious and we must value it. It also makes us realize that natural or man-made calamities never discriminate between the rich and the poor. Thus the author concludes, "India failed to save the living; now we were refusing to count our dead”
