A very good morning to one and all present here today. Honourable principal, respected teachers and my dear friends, today on 2nd October we are present here to celebrate the birth anniversaries of two great personalities of our nation i.e Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujrat. He had completed his education at Bhavnagar. Then he went to United Kingdom to become the barrister. He completed his law in 1888 and went to South Africa for practice. At that time our country was ruled by the British, where the people were treated brutally by the British. His political Guru was Gopal Krishna Gokhale called Gandhiji back to our nation. So Gandhiji had decided to give up his practice as a lawyer and come back to India and fight for the Indians for freedom. He became the president of Indian National Congress in 1920 after the death of Lokmanya Tilak. He led many movements, such as non -cooperation movement (1920), Dandi March (salt Satyagraha) under the movement Civil Disobedience (1930), Ouit India movement (1942) and so on. He fought against the British by using his powerful weapons, truth and non-violence. So, he was called the devotee of truth and non violence. In his honour, United Nations' General Assembly has announced 2nd October as the International world non-violence day on 15th June 2007.
He was an Indian Lawyer, anti- colonial nationalist, ethicist, social reformer and a great writer. "My Experiments with Truth"was his autobiography. He also started two newspapers named Harijan and Young India. He advocated cleanliness drive. He tried to eradicate the untouchability custom and other evils from Indian society.
He advocated the use of swadeshi goods and khaadi. Simple living and high thinking was his motto. He gave the lesson of self reliant. He acted as he spoke. He also commited mistakes like theft and telling lies in his childhood but he confessed his guilts .This fact is also mentioned in his autobiography. It shows that he was a devotee of truth. On seeing his life and work, we get many moral lessons. He fraught for the freedom and make our nation free from British rules. So the song is rightly describ the fact
"De di hame aazadi, bina khadag bina dhal, Sabarmati ke Sant tune kardiya kamal"
