Poetic Appreciation of

"Where The Mind is Without Fear"

The Poem "Where The Mind is Without Fear" is originally composed in the Bengali language with the title "Prarthana" and later translated into English by the first noble laureate of our nation Rabindranath Tagore. Who is also known as a phenomenal writer, poet, and philosopher? The poet promotes free verse and the present poem is also composed in free verse hence there is no rhymes and meter (rhythm) in the poem. The poem was composed in the year 1910 when the poet was deeply influenced by the Bang Bhang by the Britishers. That is Bengal was divided into East and West Bengal based on caste, creed, and religion. Hence the poet prayprayedGod to awaken his countrymen into the "Heaven of Freedom" and bring the freedom of good thoughts, good deeds, and good action as well as Educational, Spiritual, and Economical freedom for his countrymen.
The poem is figurative and the prominent figures of speech in the poem are Alliteration, Personification, and Metaphor.
In the line "Where tireless starving stretched its arms toward perfection" in this line we can see that tireless striving is personified by giving human qualities.
The poem has a special feature that it Coveys the patriotic feelings towards his nation and his countrymen. The poem is full of imagery. I like the very first line poem "Where The Mind is Without Fear and the head is held high" because it shows the positive qualities of life, like fearlessness, dignity, and self-esteem. I like this poem because the poet encourages the readers to develop the life skills like Empathy, Patriotism, and broad Mind ness. __________________________________________
